Artist and Sculptor
With an abiding love of nature developed roaming through the lush green fields of her Ohio childhood,
Rosiland Solomon has always painted, sketched or created nature-based art. She started out creating
clay figure sculptures for molds when she first came to California, but switched to two-dimensional art
in 1979 when she began her art career as a children’s book illustrator. She originally worked in air-
brushed gouache and pencil to create illustrations for textbooks K-12 as well as 13 children’s books,
and advertising art for clients such as Disney Advertising. Later switching to Art licensing, she became
known for her paintings used in jigsaw puzzles, fabric design, decorative tiles, and other products.
A little after the turn of the century, a Tsunami washed beautifully twisted old kelp plants up on the shores
in San Francisco, where she lived by the ocean. These beautifully twisted Sea Sculptures called to her,
and she went down to the ocean with her clippers and began creating these natural sculptures out of
kelp, wood, shells, and other matter she found by the sea. Rosiland is currently displaying these
sculptures at Salinas Valley Art Gallery.in Oldtown Salinas.
